I am incapable of not eating dessert. I’m not saying I have a cupcake every time, but in my head a meal is not a meal until it ends with something sweet. Ok, maybe not breakfast, but Oprah thinks it should.
In trying to find scholarly work that supports my theory that you can eat dessert and not gain weight, I came across the study in that Oprah piece and could go no further because it made me so mad. In the study, one group eats a “modest” breakfast while another goes “all out with a high-calorie (600) meal” that included a fudge brownie. Lo and behold, the dessert-at-breakfast crew lost more weight and maintained the loss longer than the brownie-less group. But here’s the thing: How is a 600-calorie breakfast considered a massive binge? If you ate three 600-calorie meals in a day you’d come in at 1800 calories, which for an active adult is really no issue at all.
My totally unofficial semi-professional opinion is that this is yet another misinterpretation of nutrition research and the “binge” group really kept the weight off because they were eating a substantial breakfast, not necessarily because they ate the brownie. (Although I do support brownie consumption.) I don’t know who decided that we should be eating 100-calorie bars and 60-calorie yogurts and shit for breakfast followed by 100-calorie cans of soup for lunch, but they are out of their minds. It just doesn’t work like that, and this study, I would argue, is proof of that… not so much that you should eat brownies for breakfast.
Growing up my mom always had some kind of cookies or brownies or fudgesicles or pudding or something laying around and it was common practice to wrap up dinner that way. So I still do it today.
Chocolate in any form is my drug of choice, but last night I had vanilla ice cream with fresh strawberries. Usually there are some spoonfuls of peanut butter with chocolate chips going on. I’m not too picky.
I guess I find that a little something sweet signals to me that the meal is over. I guess I also feel like life is just too short. Anybody else pro dessert?
