Things I Wear

Some very nice people have asked me recently to talk about what I wear, which makes me feel super awesome and special like “OH MY GOD SOMEONE NOTICED I GOT DRESSED TODAY” so I’m going to do that. We’re going to have to address the fact that there are lots of pictures of me taking pictures of me. I need us to all just deal with that. If Clueless taught us anything it’s that you are always supposed to take a picture of your outfit before you wear it. Everyone knows this.

Anyway, as you will quickly learn, this is a ridiculous post because the answer to what I wear is that I just wear cheap, cheap shit all the time. Every single thing I own comes from: TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Target, department store clearance racks and assorted resale shops in town. But I do feel like I’m a master of these shopping environments and have fallen into a pretty consistent well-defined personal style.

My “signature”, if you will, is a heavily adorned right wrist filled with watches, beads, bangles, hairbands and whatever else I can find to overcompensate for the fact that I don’t have a tattoo there.

Other than that, this is kind of what I’m working with…

Black and White

No surprise here.

Big Giant (Cheap) Necklaces

I like to get these at resale and consignment shops because I don’t know who Target thinks she is selling fake jewels for $19.99. Not happening.

Shift Dress + Tights

I love tights. Tights for days, ladies. Tights. for. days. And I like these unobtrusive dresses because they are kind of like not wearing anything at all, which is basically what I’m going for at all times. I got the pink dress for $9 resale and the blue BCBG on clearance for like… $25.

Vegan Boots

Trust me when I tell you that a Google search for “vegan boots” will yield dismal results. The problem isn’t that there aren’t good vegan boots out there; the problem is that no one tags them as such so you’ll never find them. Better searches are “boots all man-made materials” or “synthetic boots.” Personally, I don’t shop online. It gives me anxiety. I just go to TJ Maxx and check inside all the boots until I see one that says “all manmade materials.” Works every time. My faaaaaavorites are some brown Blowfish with a little heel, some black flats (also by Blowfish, I think), and some heavily embellished combat boots (by Coconuts) that I got for $25 at TJ Maxx to take to Tanzania with the intention of leaving them. I loved them so much they made the trek home.

Colored Pants

Perhaps you have noticed there are no jeans on this list. I don’t like jeans that much and I just don’t care. Maybe I wore yoga pants for too long or maybe I haven’t found my match yet, but I’m simply not on that bandwagon. I do, however, like assorted other pants of all colors. Right now I have red, pink and green ones. I can’t wait to buy white ones. Obviously I wear black skinny jeans every day and I would consider those not real denim but also not a color so…

Gold

Gold is, in my opinion, a lifestyle, not a precious metal. So we’re talking fake gold here, obviously.

Ridiculous Age-Inappropriate T-Shirts

These are my favorite.

And I hope it goes without saying that sweatpants and yoga pants are a part of the daily rotation.

Thanks for indulging me. What are you wearing these days?

  1. Fun article! And since you asked; Converse sneakers (grey today) black jeans and my Rocky & Bullwinkle sweat shirt. All covered in cat hair…of course. 😉

    • This sounds like my life.

      • Power to the fur!:)

  2. I’m really not a fan of shirts that say things but that I like to say things and eat stuff shirt is pretty cool. Loved this post! I have no idea how to dress myself.

    • It’s one of my finer purchases, for sure.

  3. Sometimes I try to force myself out of my preppy bubble and add some patterns or layers and some necklaces and a huge pile of bracelets and ask myself, “Would Katie wear this? Would she actually look cool in it?” Then, even when I decide yes, it does not mean that I, in turn, will look cool in it. And then I put on a button down and monogrammed sweater.

I just switched to a job that has a casual dress code and for 2 months I refused to stop wearing dresses, heels, skirts and matching accessories. Then it got cold and I’m on my 6th month here wearing oversized sweaters, stretchy skinny jeans and knee high boots every single day. My life feels a lot easier now. And a lot more comfortable.

    • Ha! That was me for the entire last two years–yoga teacher and work-from-home freelance consultant. I’m really enjoying getting dressed as a change of pace.

  5. Love the post! I have sooo many accessories but I never wear them! I need to change that ASAP. I’m a huge fan of tights and comfy dresses and boots. And right now I’m on a colored skinny jeans kick.

    • Colored skinny jeans for life. Wear those accessories!

  6. I like it! I have such a hard time dressing every day. Do you “dress” every day? Besides that moment you get out of bed?

    • I totally only allot myself like -15 minutes to “get dressed.” It’s outrageous. I’m always on the computer for like an hour and half and then I’m like DEAR GOD I SHOULD HAVE LEFT 15 MINUTES AGO. And that’s when I get dressed.

  7. Also, could you discuss how you have learned to navigate these stores? I always get so overwhelmed!

    • Yes! I will totally do a TJMaxx 101.

Love this post! I usually find myself wearing all black–it reflects my feelings on this dreadful winter–but lately I’ve been into florals. Also Converses..all while covered in cat hair.
